Confirmation, since the apostolic period until the ninth century, baptism and confirmation formed one single rite; in the Acts of the Apostles it is called “baptism in the Spirit”. During apostolic times, the apostles imposed hands on the baptized, the sign of confirmation. At a later period, bishops imposed hands on the recently baptized and anointed them with the Oil of Chrism. Confirmation is the sacrament by which a baptized person participates fully in the mystery of Jesus Christ. This sacrament confers the gift of the Holy Spirit in a special way. For this reason, the confirmed Christian has a mission to be a faithful witness of Jesus Christ and a participant in the building of the Kingdom of God in the world.

St. Anthony children who have received First Eucharist are confirmed in the Seventh Grade after at least two consecutive years of faith formation classes. Children seventh grade and above who have not received First Eucharist and who wish to be confirmed should call the Faith Formation Office, 916-392-6362, for information about what is required. Catholic adults who have been baptized and have received their First Eucharist are required to attend a short formation class prior to Confirmation. Please call the Parish Office for more information.

Adults of other faiths, or Catholic adults who have not received First Eucharist, are to participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) prior to Confirmation. Please call Barbara Collins, 916-428-5678, for more information.
