Marriage

Marriage, the human reality of marriage grounded in faith becomes a sacrament, a sign of the unity and faithful love which exists between Christ Jesus and the People of God just as God entered into a covenant with Israel. The Sacrament of Marriage involves the commitment of a man and a woman who love each other enough to create a shared life together. The living out of this commitment ordinarily involves the sharing of life with children as well as raising children in an environment of love and care. The two people entering marriage are the ministers of this sacrament; the priest or deacon is the witness for the Christian community. The common goal of marriage for a couple is their love, care and respect for one another in their journey of life together. Each spouse is to help the other becomes the best person each can be. As St Paul states, such a love is patient and kind. It is not jealous, does not put on airs nor is it snobbish. It is never rude or self-seeking, it is not prone to anger; neither does it brood over injuries. Real love rejoices in the truth. (1 Corinthians 13). As a mutual gift of two persons, this intimate union of marriage imposes a commitment of fidelity to each other so that in truth they may become one in being.

As with all sacraments, formation is required of couples prior to marriage at St. Anthony Parish. Please call the parish office, 916-428-5678, at least six months before your intended wedding date to begin the marriage formation process.
